More than 60 residents of Bladen and Columbus counties gathered at the George Henry White Memorial Health and Education Center to discuss the future of the Mitchell Field Burial Ground, a historic and current place of burial for the people of the region.
This is of special importance to the descendants of Benjamin and Edith Spaulding, the "first couple" of the cemetery. The land was donated as a place of interment for the people of the area, many years ago.
Mr. Ocie Jones, local superintendent of the GHW center, welcomed guests and Dr. Marie Campbell facilitated the meeting. Initially, the concern was about the maintenance and upkeep of the two plots of land that together make up the larger burial area. However, it soon became apparent that there are issues of legal and financial status that must be worked out. A follow-up meeting will take place on Saturday, April 2, 2022.
"It's wonderful to be able to have a meeting place for the community where civic matters can be discussed. We look forward to working with all the local people to come to a wise and fruitful solution that will create a legacy for our own descendants," said Mr. Jones.
