On Saturday, Dec. 6, a dozen people gathered to develop skills in high-quality video production at the George Henry White Center.
The informational training, facilitated by professional film and video producer Kate Tsubata, covered the basics of visual storytelling, the use of sound and lights, the prep and production process, and the roles of each person on a crew.
After lunch, the group moved upstairs into the Media production studio. They worked to arrange the backdrops, lights, microphones and camera set up. They rotated the roles of camera operation, sound, directing and interviewing. Vince Spaulding, who has been leading the George Henry White project's development, sat in as the interviewee. The team took turns asking him questions, and capturing his responses on camera.
After, the class reviewed all the footage, as the camera was linked to the large editing monitors. They discussed issues that could be improved in future sessions.
Following the media lab session, the group learned some of the ways that Oral History projects could be done. They asked questions regarding projects they were already developing. "This was the inauguration of the Media Studio," said Ocie Jones, superintendent. "We're happy to finally see this space be used to serve the community."
"I always say, this project is all from Divine Intervention," said Vince Spaulding. "Here in the area where I grew up, where Congressman George Henry White grew up, we've built a place where people can learn skills and get information to benefit their whole lives."
"12 years ago, I made a documentary short about George Henry White, which inspired the development of a community center as a living tribute to his legacy," said Kate Tsubata. "It makes sense to bring this full circle, teaching others to create their own video products, as a way of changing the world around us."
